My baby has a drinking problem.
It started when he was about 2 months old. He had been drinking bottles for awhile and couldn't get enough milk.
Then he started to get really fussy around feeding time, crying and trying to get away from the bottle.
We tried different bottles, different formula and different approaches to feeding him. I searched the internet, talked to my doctor and even called a hotline!
We thought he might have acid reflux so his doctor had him use some medication. We were so frustrated because he wasn't drinking enough milk and was so miserable.
I think the medicine helped but he has been off of it for awhile (because he stopped puking 10 times after every bottle) and it has pretty much stayed the same, which was never very good to begin with.
I am really sure he doesn't have acid reflux, but he STILL desperately avoids the bottle and cries bloody murder.
He doesn't do it all the time but probably every other bottle. And if we are somewhere else, you can forget feeding him altogether.
If there is noise, it there is anything in the room different to distract him, if someone is talking, if someone moves, if i move, if he moves, he will not eat anymore.
I know he's thirsty, if i pin his arms down and put him in a headlock (gently) he eventually drinks through his screams and doesn't take one break until it's done. He will wait 10 hours before feeding sometimes, and often skips his nighttime bottle.
Has anyone known if any other baby like this? We have tried so many things, and i just hope that when he switches to sippy cups (he will not drink from one now, but i still offer it to him everyday) he will get what he needs and not be crazy.
He's almost 1 right? Are you interested in giving him cow's milk to see if he'll 1) try it and drink it for you and 2) if he can keep it down? And when I say "cow's milk" I'm meaning raw cow's milk with all the good nutrients and good bacteria still in it..the kind that our bodies are able to digest easier (the stuff they put in after it's pasteurized is much more difficult for our bodies to handle well). My 2 yr old, Dallin absolutely LOVES that stuff. ha. He can drink an entire gallon of "Molly's Milk" (my parents' cow) in about 3 and 1/2 days. BY HIMSELF. He's been drinking it since a couple months before his 1st b-day. There's lots of controversial stuff out there about raw cow's milk being safe or not safe which is "why they pasteurize it" but without getting into tons of facts and all that other stuff I'll just say that a large reason for the debate is that dairies are filthy places and a mire for diseases to be caught and spread. When there are only a few cows or only 1 and they aren't given any hormones or other nasty/unhealthy stuff and they feed on good grains and good grass, the milk is much better. My parents have 1 cow (Molly) and she is all by herself (right on my parents' street). Not kept at any dairy, or with a bunch of other cows, etc. They also don't give her any hormones, additives, etc. Anyway, it's worth a try if you're interested. Better to try and have it work than to not try and never know, eh? Let me know if you're interested!
ReplyDeleteYou poor thing! I know I am a stranger but my friend just forwarded me your post because my baby did the exact same thing! I seriously laughed out loud when you said you called a hotline because I was so desperate that I did too! I spent so many weeks crying and sobbing right along with my baby becuase I was SURE she was starving herself. We had an upper GI also becuause I was sure that soemthing must be hurting her when she would eat. But it really showed nothing. What has finally been working for us is Alimentum formula with previcid for the reflux. I know that may not work for you but it may be worth a try. Hang in there! You can read all about my struggle at www.julzfam.blogspot.com I first posted about it on 3/30/11 and then again on 4/21/11, i wrote about it many times but mostly just mixed in with other posts. Good luck I hope it gets better soon!
